The Forerunner · Theme

Truth and Disguise

How The Forerunner develops Truth and Disguise.

Truth often appears in disguise, as in 'The Last Watch,' where the Forerunner hides love behind bitterness, and in 'The Saint,' where the saint falsely accuses himself to comfort a brigand, revealing that comfort can be more important than literal truth.

Where it surfaces

  • God's Fool

The dreamer's inability to understand the language and customs leads him to misinterpret every event, disguising the truth of his condemnation as celebration.

  • The King-Hermit

The king-hermit leaves his throne because his chamberlain disguises truth by projecting his own vices and virtues onto the king.

  • The Lion’s Daughter

The cat speaks truths that the slaves and queen cannot or will not see, using its purring as a disguise for its sharp observations.

  • The Saint

The saint's confession is not literally true, yet it serves a deeper truth that comforts the brigand.

  • Critics

The critics disguise their own lack of compassion by focusing on the traveller's faults, avoiding the truth of the thief's wrongdoing.

  • The King of Aradus

The king's laughter and the chamberlain's remark reveal a hidden truth about the king's own indulgence, contrasting the elders' earnest request with the ironic reality.

  • Dynasties

The prophet speaks a truth that the king cannot bear, leading to murder and a hidden truth whispered among the wise.

  • Knowledge and Half-Knowledge

Each frog's claim contains a fragment of truth, but the whole truth is disguised by their insistence on exclusivity.

  • Repentance

The man's conscience reveals the truth of his wrongdoing, piercing the disguise of his theft.

  • The Last Watch

The Forerunner hides his love behind harsh words and an iron mask, only to reveal the truth of his heart in the end.
