  1. Chapter 1

Book I: The Dawn of the Food

The chapter introduces the discovery of the Heracleophorbia, a substance that causes unprecedented growth in living organisms. Mr. Bensington and Professor Redwood, the scientists behind the discovery, begin experimenting with the Food on a farm in Hickleybrow. The initial results are astonishing, as chicks grow to giant sizes, but the unintended consequences quickly spiral out of control, leading to giant wasps and rats terrorizing the countryside. Cossar joins the effort to contain the chaos, while Dr. Winkles becomes involved, seeing potential in the Food. The chapter sets the stage for the broader societal and ecological upheaval caused by the Food.

  2. Chapter 2

    The Discovery of the Food

The chapter introduces Mr. Bensington and Professor Redwood, two eminent but unremarkable scientists, and describes the origin of their discovery of a growth-promoting substance they call Herakleophorbia IV, which Bensington briefly and enthusiastically dubs 'the Food of the Gods.' The idea arises from Redwood's research on growth patterns, suggesting that growth depends on a slowly replenished substance in the blood, leading Bensington to propose artificially supplying it.

  3. Chapter 3

    I

Professor Redwood travels south through a war-torn landscape to reunite with the giant children, reflecting on the unintended spread of the Food and the ongoing conflict with Caterham's forces.

  4. Chapter 4

    II

Redwood, accompanied by Cossar, descends into the Giants' hidden pit shelter, where he witnesses the intimate bond between his son and the Giant Princess. He realizes that the new generation has taken over, and he and Cossar are now obsolete. Cossar pragmatically declares that death is the natural end of one generation's work, making way for the next.

  5. Chapter 5

    The Gathering of the Giants

Redwood addresses the assembled Giants in their pit, delivering Caterham's impossible terms: they must retreat to a remote region, cease using the Food, and have no children, effectively ending their race. The Giants unanimously reject the offer, affirming their commitment to growth and the future. Young Redwood articulates their purpose: to serve the spirit of growth and pass it to still greater lives, accepting endless conflict with the little people. The chapter ends with Redwood's moment of doubt and reaffirmation, as the Giants prepare for battle at dawn.
