Chapter 1
A Night on the Veluwe
On a desolate winter night on the Veluwe, Lord Stoutenburg and Heemskerk discuss Stoutenburg's obsessive plot to assassinate Maurice of Nassau, his bitter hatred for Gilda Beresteyn's marriage to Diogenes, and his secret intelligence-gathering. The philosopher Pythagoras stumbles upon their meeting, revealing he is on his way to the wedding of Diogenes and Gilda, which enrages Stoutenburg before he regains composure.
Chapter 2

Gilda remains in the lonely molen on the Veluwe, recovering from the shock of recent events. Her old serving-woman Maria, who had been bound and gagged by two ruffians, is released and tends to Gilda, offering comfort and wine to help her regain composure.

Diogenes finds Gilda asleep in the arms of an old woman, takes her into his own arms, and watches over her through the night, sharing a moment of pure love and contentment.

Gilda Beresteyn's unwavering loyalty and courage are highlighted as she supports the Englishman through his dangerous mission. Despite doubts from others, including the Stadtholder, she never wavers. Marquet's forces engage Beresteyn's encampment, leading to a battle where Nicolaes Beresteyn falls. The burgomaster, upon hearing of his son's death, thanks God.
