## Snapshot

A seasoned diplomat whose name surfaces wherever passion and politics collide, the man who understands better than anyone what love can drive a courtier to do.

## Who they are

Sir Nicholas Throckmorton moves through the story as a fixer and a witness, the sort of courtier who reads other men's madness accurately and acts to contain it. He grasps at once that Thomas Culpepper is mad for love of the Queen, and he persuades the Scottish authorities to keep the man jailed until the fit passes, buying time with a clear-eyed pragmatism that the lovers themselves lack. He matters because his interventions shape the dangerous currents around Katharine, and because his cool judgment offers a contrast to the feverish devotion that threatens to undo her.
