  1. Chapter 1

    The Arrest of Arsène Lupin

On the transatlantic steamer La Provence, a wireless message reveals that Arsène Lupin is aboard, disguised as a first-class passenger with a wound on his right forearm. The passengers, including the narrator Bernard d'Andrézy and Miss Nelly Underdown, are thrown into a state of fear and suspicion. After a series of thefts and an assault on Rozaine, Detective Ganimard arrests d'Andrézy at the gangway, revealing him to be Arsène Lupin.

  2. Chapter 2

    Arsène Lupin in Prison

Ganimard visits Lupin in prison to seek information about the Cahorn affair. Lupin reveals he orchestrated the theft from his cell, communicates via coded messages in food, and boasts that he will not attend his own trial. The chapter details the baffling theft at the Château de Malaquis, where guards were drugged and treasures vanished without a trace, leading Ganimard to insist that only Lupin could have masterminded it.

  3. Chapter 3

III: The Escape of Arsène Lupin

Arsène Lupin, imprisoned and awaiting trial, orchestrates a complex escape plan. After a message hidden in a cigar is discovered by the police, Lupin's subsequent escape attempt fails, but he announces his intention to escape before his trial. Over two months, he feigns lethargy and is moved to a different cell. On the day of his trial, a man named Baudru Désiré is brought before the court. Detective Ganimard and the gaoler testify that the prisoner is not Arsène Lupin, revealing that a substitution occurred two months earlier when Baudru was mistakenly taken from the Dépôt in Lupin's place.

  4. Chapter 4

    The Mysterious Traveller

Arsène Lupin, traveling under the alias Guillaume Berlat, is bound and robbed by a mysterious fellow passenger on a train to Rouen. After being tied up and losing his wallet and papers, Lupin is later freed by the police and, using his assumed identity, leads a chase after the thief, only to find himself racing the train and pursuing the fugitive through the countryside.

  5. Chapter 5

    V: The Queen’s Necklace

The Countess de Dreux-Soubise wears the historic Queen's Necklace to a reception. After returning home, the Count hides it in a cabinet adjoining their bedroom. The next morning, the necklace has vanished. The commissary of police, Monsieur Valorbe, investigates, questioning the countess's seamstress Henriette, whose kitchen window faces the same inner court as the cabinet's window. The chapter ends with the necklace mysteriously returned to the countess four days later, and the Echo de France publishes a statement crediting Arsène Lupin with its recovery.
