Three children—Gerald, Jimmy, and Kathleen—are forced to spend their holidays at Kathleen's school due to a measles outbreak. They explore a nearby garden and discover a maze, where they find a clue leading to a sleeping princess. After kissing her awake, she claims to be a real princess from an enchanted castle, and they set off to explore further.
Chapter 4
The Princess's Magic
The children explore the castle and discover a room full of magical objects. The Princess demonstrates invisibility using a ring, but Jimmy peeks and sees her hide in a secret panel. Later, the Princess admits she was only playing pretend, but the ring actually makes her invisible and she cannot remove it. The children try to comfort her and suggest using a buckle to undo the magic, while they head to the Temple of Flora.
Chapter 5
The Invisible Companion and the Conjuring Scheme
Gerald, Kathleen, and Jimmy grapple with the awkwardness of having an invisible companion, Mabel Prowse, who became invisible after putting on a magic ring. Mabel writes a deceptive note to her aunt claiming she has been adopted by a lady in a motorcar, and the children gain permission to roam the castle grounds. Mabel proposes that Gerald pose as a conjurer at the fair while she performs the tricks invisibly. Gerald disguises himself with blackened skin and a turban, and they set off to the fair to earn money.
