I: Paris: 1793
The chapter depicts Paris in September 1793, a city consumed by the Terror, with the National Assembly debating a new state religion centered on a Goddess of Reason. Various revolutionary figures propose increasingly brutal spectacles, while Robespierre quietly calculates how to exploit the chaos for his own ambition.
Chapter 4
II: A Retrospect
In a dark, ruined boudoir of the Tuileries, Robespierre and Chauvelin confront the persistent threat of the Scarlet Pimpernel. A grimy scrap of paper bearing the famous doggerel rhyme and a star-shaped flower emblem links the English hero to a series of daring rescues, including the escape of Paul Déroulède and Juliette Marny. Through flashback, Chauvelin recalls his humiliation in London and the elusive figure who mocks the French authorities. The chapter also recounts the raid by Tinville and Merlin on a Paris lodging house, where the landlady Citizeness Brogard reveals the Englishman's stay and his cryptic note, which ultimately reaches Robespierre and prompts the summons to Chauvelin.
Chapter 5
III: Ex-Ambassador Chauvelin
Chauvelin is summoned by Robespierre, who taunts him for his past failure to capture the Scarlet Pimpernel. Robespierre grants Chauvelin a renewed chance to redeem himself, providing funds and the Marny necklace for his mission to England. Chauvelin, though humiliated, accepts the challenge, determined to succeed this time.
