# How does The Eclogues develop the theme of Divinity and Fate?

> The Eclogues by Virgil

## Answer

The Eclogues by Virgil develops Divinity and Fate across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Gods, prophecies, and supernatural forces shape human events, from Tityrus's gratitude to a 'deity' for his restored land to the Sibylline prophecy of a golden child in Pastoral IV and the magic spells in Pastoral VIII.

Tityrus attributes his good fortune to a 'deity' (Augustus), whom he regards as a god. Meliboeus, by contrast, feels condemned by fate's unjust decree, highlighting the interplay of divine favor and human suffering.

The child is of celestial seed, the Fates spin a happy web, and the prophecy is framed as a divine decree.

The chapter centers on the death and deification of Daphnis, exploring themes of mortality, fate, and the elevation of a mortal to divine status.
