## Who they are

Tityrus sits in beechen shade while his neighbor Meliboeus trudges into exile, and the contrast is the whole first Eclogue. He admits he was a fool who measured imperial Rome by Mantua, and that only in the city did he find liberty and a deity who heard his prayer. His contentment is not smug but grateful, and it anchors the book's recurring question: who gets to keep a home, and who is made to sing about losing one.
