## Who they are

Meliboeus opens the Eclogues not with song but with banishment: his goats are failing, his ewe has left her young on the rocks, and the raven croaked from the blasted oak. He envies no one, he says, but he wonders aloud why Tityrus's ground was spared while fire and sword took the neighborhood. His grief gives the pastoral its political undertow, the knowledge that a landscape of shade and pipes can be revoked by decree.
