## Who they are

Gallus is the collection's most personal sorrow, a fellow poet transplanted into Arcadia and left languishing under a rock while nymphs, Silvanus, Pan, and even Apollo come to console him. He refuses comfort, insisting that only Arcadian songs can properly carry his grief, and imagines the pastoral life he might have had. His presence turns the tenth eclogue into an elegy for love and for the limits of poetry to cure what it describes.
