# Sir Timothy Beeswax — The Duke’s Children character guide

> Sir Timothy Beeswax in The Duke’s Children by Anthony Trollope.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Sir Timothy, Beeswax, old Beeswax

**First appearance:** 0020-xxi-sir-timothy-beeswax

## Snapshot

A Conservative politician and the Duke's parliamentary rival, mocked by Lady Cantrip as a man no gentleman should have to endure.

## Who they are

Beeswax is the Duke's opposite in the House, a man of parliamentary aptitude rather than birth, whose quarrel with Phineas Finn becomes a running topic of dinner-table politics. Lady Cantrip's sarcasms and the Duke's reluctant praise of his foe's skill reveal how the old aristocratic order regards the new professional politician. His presence gives the novel its political texture and shows the Duke's dignity in refusing to speak ill even of a rival.
