# Reginald Dobbes — The Duke’s Children character guide

> Reginald Dobbes in The Duke’s Children by Anthony Trollope.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mr. Dobbes, Dobbes

**First appearance:** 0035-xxxvi-tallyho-lodge

## Snapshot

A humorless sporting fanatic who measures every man by his shooting and considers self-denial in all things except his own pleasures.

## Who they are

Dobbes runs the shooting at Crummie-Toddie with military discipline, despising anyone who cannot walk thirty miles with a gun and resenting young lords who arrive without proper credentials. His contempt for Silverbridge's mediocre aim and Gerald's youth exposes the petty hierarchies that govern even a hunting party. He matters because the house party he hosts becomes the accidental stage on which Silverbridge's romantic indecision — Mabel here, Isabel there — plays out under the least sympathetic of overseers.
