Her loyalty to Mabel is absolute, yet she can do nothing to alter the cold arithmetic of a marriage market that values birth and fortune over feeling. Through her anxious eyes the reader grasps how much rides on Mabel's dwindling chances — and how little power a companion has to change them. ## Relationships ### [Lord Silverbridge](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/characters/lord_silverbridge) _social_ Miss Cassewary is Lady Mabel's companion and a friendly, gossipy presence in Silverbridge's social circle. ### [Lady Mabel Grex](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/characters/lady_mabel_grex) _social_ Miss Cassewary serves as Lady Mabel's elderly companion and confidante, sharing her secrets and frustrations. ### [Frank Tregear](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/characters/frank_tregear) _social_ Frank Tregear is acquainted with Miss Cassewary through Lady Mabel, and she acts as a go-between in their past romance. ### [Frank Tregear](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/characters/frank_tregear) _social_ Frank Tregear is acquainted with Miss Cassewary through Lady Mabel, and she acts as a go-between in their past romance. ### [Lord Silverbridge](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/characters/lord_silverbridge) _social_ Miss Cassewary is Lady Mabel's companion and a friendly, gossipy presence in Silverbridge's social circle. ### [Lady Mabel Grex](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/characters/lady_mabel_grex) _social_ Miss Cassewary serves as Lady Mabel's elderly companion and confidante, sharing her secrets and frustrations. ### [Lord Silverbridge](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/characters/lord_silverbridge) _social_ Miss Cassewary is Lady Mabel's companion and a friendly, gossipy presence in Silverbridge's social circle. ### [Lady Mabel Grex](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/characters/lady_mabel_grex) _social_ Miss Cassewary serves as Lady Mabel's elderly companion and confidante, sharing her secrets and frustrations. ### [Frank Tregear](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/characters/frank_tregear) _social_ Frank Tregear is acquainted with Miss Cassewary through Lady Mabel, and she acts as a go-between in their past romance. ## In the story ### [IX: “In Medias Res”](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/chapters/ix-in-medias-res) Returns from church, engages in political talk, and chaperones Lady Mabel. ### [Why Not Like Romeo if I Feel Like Romeo?](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/chapters/x-why-not-like-romeo-if-i-feel-like-romeo) Objects to Mabel meeting Tregear alone, citing the Earl's disapproval, but is overruled. ### [At Richmond](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/chapters/xii-at-richmond) Gives Lady Cantrip a positive opinion of Tregear, though noting his lack of a profession. ### [Poor Boy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/chapters/xvi-poor-boy) Present during the conversation, leaves the room to allow private talk between Silverbridge and Mabel. ### [Then He Will Come Again](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/chapters/xx-then-he-will-come-again) Mabel's companion; listens to Mabel's confidences about Tregear's gambling and Silverbridge's proposal; offers comfort and advice. ### [The Lovers Meet](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_duke_s_children_se/chapters/xxix-the-lovers-meet) Acts as chaperone, is shocked by the lovers' display, and urges Tregear to leave. ### [Miss Boncassen's River-Party.
