# Duchess of Malfi — The Duchess of Malfi character guide

> Duchess of Malfi in The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Duchess, Malfi, Duchess of Malfi Cariola

**First appearance:** 0002-the-duchess-of-malfi

## Snapshot

A widowed ruler who weds her own steward in secret, daring her powerful brothers to stop a marriage they would call treason.

## Who they are

She governs Malfi with wit and warmth, but her brothers' grip on her widowhood turns every private choice into a public gamble. In the betrothal scene she signs Antonio's 'Quietus est' on his lips, kneels with him before a hidden witness, and insists the church need only echo what they have already made. That blend of tenderness and nerve — 'I now am blind,' she says, handing him her fortune — sets the play's central engine: a woman who would rather risk ruin than obey.
