# Daniel de Bosola — The Duchess of Malfi character guide

> Daniel de Bosola in The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Bosola, Pescara Bosola, Bosala

**First appearance:** 0002-the-duchess-of-malfi

## Snapshot

A malcontent ex-galley-slave turned hired intelligence, whose bitter railing at court vice masks an appetite for the very vices he condemns.

## Who they are

Bosola haunts the Cardinal for reward and takes Ferdinand's coin to spy on the Duchess, all while delivering the play's sharpest anatomy of corruption — he rails at what he wants and would be as bloody as any man given means. His mockery of Castruccio and the painted Old Lady shows a mind that sees through everyone, including himself. He matters because the plot's cruelty passes through his hands, and his conscience, once stirred, becomes the story's most uneasy witness.
