# Antonio Bologna — The Duchess of Malfi character guide

> Antonio Bologna in The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Antonio, Silvio, Silvio Antonio Bologna

**First appearance:** 0002-the-duchess-of-malfi

## Snapshot

The Duchess's trusted steward, whose honesty and quiet competence make him both the worthiest man at court and the most dangerous secret it keeps.

## Who they are

Fresh from observing the French court's disciplined order, Antonio returns to Malfi as master of the Duchess's household — admired, discreet, and entirely unprepared for what she asks of him. In the betrothal he answers her vows with images of moving spheres and loving palms, then worries aloud about her brothers' reach. His integrity is the point: a man too honest for the Cardinal's errands, which is exactly why loving him costs the Duchess everything.
