Martial's spirited horse, petted and fed by Felise, is dragged into Godwin's vengeance and becomes the instrument — and casualty — of a monstrous cruelty.

## Who they are

Ruy belongs to Martial, the man Felise loves, and the animal has known her kindness at the stable and in the field. When Godwin binds Felise to the ground and tries to drive the horse's hoof down upon her face, Ruy balks and jerks, refusing again and again to trample her. The standoff ends only when Martial's rifle shot strikes Ruy at the temple, killing him instantly — a death that saves Felise and marks the moment her rescue becomes irrevocable.
