## Snapshot

A magnate of the old stamp, whose name alone can raise a province and whose favor Charnyetski must win before the campaign can move.

## Who they are

Yan Zamoyski is the kind of lord whose word summons peasants to burn bridges and hide grain, and whose vanity must be stroked before his power will stir. Charnyetski needs him badly enough to send an envoy with honeyed flattery, and the negotiation becomes a small comedy of pride and persuasion. He represents the great magnates on whom the Commonwealth's resistance ultimately rests—men whose help is indispensable and whose egos are a campaign in themselves.
