# Pan Michael Volodyovski — The Deluge character guide > Pan Michael Volodyovski in The Deluge by Henryk Sienkiewicz. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Volodyovski, Pan Volodyovski, a Volodyovski, Pan Michael, Col. Michael Volodyovski, little Volodyovski, Michael Volodyovski, the swift-eyed Volodyovski **First appearance:** 0007-i ## Snapshot A small-statured but legendary swordsman who weighs love against duty while the trumpets of war sound in every direction. ## Who they are Volodyovski is a veteran colonel of near-constant warfare, celebrated across the Commonwealth for his blade yet painfully aware that the barracks is the only home he has. He stands at a crossroads: whether to seize a fleeting chance at marriage with a lady he has just rescued, or to answer the call of a country stretching out its hands for deliverance. His restless deliberation — courting, hesitating, then chiding himself for hesitation — captures the soldier's ache for something beyond glory, and his choice will shape the coming campaign. ## Relationships ### [Andrei Kmita](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/characters/andrei_kmita) _friendship_ Andrei Kmita and Pan Michael Volodyovski are close friends and fellow soldiers, fighting together for the Commonwealth. ### [Zagloba](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/characters/zagloba) _friendship_ Pan Michael Volodyovski and Zagloba are boon companions, with Zagloba often providing comic relief and counsel to the valiant soldier. ### [Prince Boguslav Radzivill](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/characters/prince_boguslav_radzivill) _rivalry_ Pan Michael Volodyovski is a staunch patriot and enemy of Prince Boguslav Radzivill, opposing his treasonous actions. ### [Prince Boguslav Radzivill](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/characters/prince_boguslav_radzivill) _rivalry_ Pan Michael Volodyovski is a staunch patriot and enemy of Prince Boguslav Radzivill, opposing his treasonous actions. ### [Zagloba](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/characters/zagloba) _friendship_ Pan Michael Volodyovski and Zagloba are boon companions, with Zagloba often providing comic relief and counsel to the valiant soldier. ### [Andrei Kmita](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/characters/andrei_kmita) _friendship_ Andrei Kmita and Pan Michael Volodyovski are close friends and fellow soldiers, fighting together for the Commonwealth. ### [Andrei Kmita](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/characters/andrei_kmita) _friendship_ Andrei Kmita and Pan Michael Volodyovski are close friends and fellow soldiers, fighting together for the Commonwealth. ### [Zagloba](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/characters/zagloba) _friendship_ Pan Michael Volodyovski and Zagloba are boon companions, with Zagloba often providing comic relief and counsel to the valiant soldier. ### [Prince Boguslav Radzivill](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/characters/prince_boguslav_radzivill) _rivalry_ Pan Michael Volodyovski is a staunch patriot and enemy of Prince Boguslav Radzivill, opposing his treasonous actions. ## In the story ### [The Deluge](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/the-deluge) A valiant soldier and leader who actively fights against the Swedish forces, embodying national resistance. ### [I](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/i) Young warrior who led the Lauda regiment at Shklov; recovering from wounds at Patsuneli. ### [VII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/vii) Volodyovski, dwelling in Patsuneli and recovering health, gives tidings that the king will come in spring with new troops. ### [VIII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/viii) Leads the rescue of Olenka, duels and defeats Kmita, spares his life. ### [IX](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/ix) Debates proposing to Olenka, soothsays his visit, and dresses finely to call on her at Vodokty. ### [X](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/x) Visits Kmita, confesses his own failed proposal to Olenka, offers Kmita a commission, and later goes to Vodokty only to find Olenka gone. ### [XII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/xii) Mentioned as serving in the Lithuanian quota under Prince Yanush Radzivill; the group hopes to reunite with him. ### [XIII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/xiii) Expresses shock at the arrest of Gosyevski and Yudytski, and later confesses his love for Olenka Billevich. ### [XVI](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/xvi) Imprisoned with the others; struggles with his violated obedience to the hetman and observes the battle from the window. ### [XVII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/xvii) Condemned to death by Radzivill but saved by Kmita's intercession; his life is spared and he is to be sent to Birji. ### [XVIII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/xviii) Captive colonel, discusses Zagloba's escape and Radzivill's treason with fellow prisoners. ### [XIX](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/xix) Leads the attack on the Swedish plunderers, defeats them, and later agrees to Zagloba's plan to release prisoners. ### [XX](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/xx) Leads the Lauda squadron, decides to head to Podlyasye, and skillfully evades Radzivill's pursuit. ### [XXI](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_deluge_se/chapters/xxi) Condemns Kmita as a traitor and orders his execution.
