Tsoay is one of the youngest of the stranded Apache band, close kin to Buck and picked to ride with Travis so that the younger men might learn both the land and the man. He jokes about Kaydessa's temper while his eyes hold the same respect for courage that Apache warriors have always shown a defiant captive. His presence in the scouting party matters because he represents the next generation Travis must win over if the group is to hold together.
