A shaman of the Horde whose tinkling charms and sceptical brows conceal a mind that remembers Temujin—and recognizes an Apache when he sees one.

## Who they are

Menlik advises Hulagur's fighting men, yet it is his will, not the leader's, that steadies the camp when Travis Fox walks in. He fences with Travis in accented English, testing whether the Apache comes to trade or to scout before the march of warriors, and silences Kaydessa when she speaks of freedom too boldly. His almost absent habit of remembering—of a world where the Horde was not governed by a machine—makes him the most dangerous and most necessary voice among the Tatars.
