## Who they are

Ricciardo is a man of rank and patience, tormented by his love for another man's wife and by the jealousy that keeps him from enjoying it. His scheme is audacious: he convinces the lady that her husband is having an affair, then arranges a moonlit meeting in which he plays the husband's role. His story is the Decameron's sharpest study of jealousy turned into strategy, and of how a clever man can make a woman's own suspicion the instrument of her seduction.
