## Who they are

Simona is a working girl of Florence, in love with Pasquino and careless enough to meet him in a garden with only a friend for cover. When he dies mid-caress after rubbing his teeth with a sage leaf, she is seized, accused of poison, and hauled before a judge while the true culprit — a toad lurking in the bush — goes unnoticed. Her ordeal matters because it shows how swiftly ordinary love can be twisted into crime, and how the Decameron's women must navigate suspicion as well as desire.
