## Who they are

Ferondo is a coarse, suspicious rustic whose possessiveness over his beautiful wife makes him an easy mark for the lustful abbot of a nearby monastery. Drugged, interred, and fed on scraps in a cellar rigged as the afterlife, he is convinced he has died and is being purified for his sins. His gullibility and the abbot's brazen hypocrisy make his tale one of the collection's sharpest satires of clerical corruption and marital folly.
