# Currado Malespina — The Decameron character guide

> Currado Malespina in The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Currado

**First appearance:** 0033-the-sixth-story

## Snapshot

A Lunigiana nobleman whose hunting dogs lead him to the wild woman of Ponza and whose household becomes the stage for her restoration.

## Who they are

Currado is the bridge between Beritola's island exile and her return to the world: he finds her, pities her, and persuades her into his castle at Lunigiana, where she serves his lady in widow's weeds. His patience with her refusal to be known is the tale's quiet engine, and his household becomes the place where lost children, in time, are recognized. He embodies the Decameron's ideal of the well-born man whose virtue is hospitality rather than display.
