## Who they are

Messer Currado, out hawking on his island with his lady and servants, discovers Madam Beritola living half-feral among goats and recognizes in her story a grief he cannot leave alone. He weeps for her misfortune, offers her his sister's place in his house, and patiently persuades her to leave the cave when she would rather stay. His generosity sets in motion the slow restoration of a family scattered by shipwreck and slavery, making him the quiet hinge of one of the book's longest arcs.
