A physician with shifting eyes and a Spaniard's conscience, whose genial manners conceal a soul that dares not frankly meet its fellows.

## Who they are

Dr. Seltzer has insinuated himself into Don Miguel's confidence and married into a Mexican family whose trust he never deserved. His face betrays him to anyone perceptive enough to read it, but his hosts see only courtesy where Mr. Burton sees a villain about to be brought to bay. When exposure comes, he flees rather than face it, and his cowardice becomes the surest proof of his guilt.
