Chapter 1
The Letter

Chapter 2
Events of a Night
On a stormy autumn evening, Richard Redfield, a law student, accompanies his mentor Mr. John Argyll to the Argyll home for tea. Eleanor Argyll, engaged to Henry Moreland, anxiously awaits his arrival, but he never appears. The family passes a tense evening, with Eleanor masking her disappointment in high spirits. The next morning, Henry Moreland is found murdered on the street, stabbed in the back during the storm. Richard is tasked with breaking the news to Eleanor, as the community reels from the shocking crime.
Chapter 3
Moreland Villa
Burton and an officer visit the tenement where Leesy Sullivan's aunt lives, learning of Leesy's employment in New York and her close connection to the Moreland family. Later, Burton finds Leesy alone at the Moreland villa, observing her profound despair and confronting her about her whereabouts on the night of the murder.
Chapter 4
Mr. Burton, the Detective
The narrator accompanies James Argyll and Mr. Burton, a detective, as they investigate the murder of Henry Moreland. Burton reveals his sharp instincts and moral drive, discussing the case and the suspicious sewing-girl, Leesy Sullivan. The chapter includes the funeral escort, the narrator's reflections on grief, and Burton's plan to visit Blankville to gather evidence.
Chapter 5
Two Links in the Chain
Richard returns to Blankville with Mr. Burton, visiting the Argyll office and home. James Argyll shows resentment toward Richard and the detective. Mr. Burton examines a broken chain from a fisherman's boat, finding possible evidence of tampering. Richard's deep concern for Eleanor is evident, and Mary Argyll appears briefly, subdued by grief.
