## Who they are

Marie Ivanovna arrives at the unit radiant with excitement, engaged to Trenchard within a night of meeting him, and soon transfers that engagement to Semyonov without ever quite understanding what she has done. Her ignorance of life is matched by her honesty and her strange, irrational temper, and the unit forgives her almost everything. She is the emotional hinge on which the men's rivalries turn, and her happiness in the early chapters is drawn with a lightness that makes the book's later shadows fall harder.
