The expedition's restless fisherman, forever venturing onto surf-swept rocks with his bamboo rod when prudence says stay ashore.

## Who they are

Powell is one of the shore party on Trinidad, valued for his energy and his knack for supplementing the larder with fish from the little pool and the rocks. His flaw is that same energy: he is 'very often rash,' and when heavy surf closes over the rocks, one of the expedition's few food supplies is cut off with him. His cheerfulness under privation helps hold the camp together during the long, fruitless digging.
