# Mr. A⸺ — The Cruise of the Alerte character guide

> Mr. A⸺ in The Cruise of the Alerte by E. F. Knight.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mr. A⸺

**First appearance:** 0000-i-the-history-of-the-treasure

## Snapshot

An expedition member whose name the narrator discreetly veils behind a single letter, part of the Alerte's working company.

## Who they are

Mr. A⸺ belongs to the select body of men who answer the narrator's public appeal and are gradually winnowed into the final crew. Like his shipmates, he is defined less by backstory than by how he bears the long passage, the cramped quarters, and the thankless labor ashore. His anonymity is itself telling: in this expedition, ordinary hands matter as much as the map, and the narrator's reticence hints at the private lives folded into the venture.
