The Narrator

He is the expedition's originator and chief worrier: he purchases the Alerte, converts her to a yawl, fits a condenser, and hand-picks his crew from a crowd of eager applicants. His tension is between careful seamanship and the gambler's itch that a scrap of tarpaulin might be true. Because he narrates every gale, ration, and shovelful of sand, his skepticism and hope become the reader's own.

Mr. Powell

Powell is one of the shore party on Trinidad, valued for his energy and his knack for supplementing the larder with fish from the little pool and the rocks. His flaw is that same energy: he is 'very often rash,' and when heavy surf closes over the rocks, one of the expedition's few food supplies is cut off with him. His cheerfulness under privation helps hold the camp together during the long, fruitless digging.

Arthur Cotton
