Chapter 2

The chapter opens with a poetic declaration about transforming coarse life into a delightful legend. Two sisters, Elisaveta and Elena, bathe in the River Skorodyen on a bright summer day, discussing the mysterious retired privat-docent Giorgiy Trirodov, who has settled in Skorodozh and is the subject of rumors. After bathing, they dress and walk to Trirodov's property, where a pale boy silently opens a gate for them. Inside, they observe a glade full of children singing and dancing under the direction of a golden-haired girl, and the children welcome them warmly.
Chapter 3

The Rameyev sisters approach Trirodov's mysterious estate, surrounded by ominous rumors and supernatural legends. Inside, Trirodov and his son Kirsha discuss the sisters' arrival, with Kirsha using his unusual intuition to persuade his father to invite them in. Trirodov reluctantly agrees and arranges for them to enter through a secret underground passage.

The sisters Elena and Elisaveta, having lost their way in a thicket, are guided by the mysterious boy Kirsha Trirodov through an underground passage into a strange greenhouse and then into Trirodov's house and garden. They experience a series of uncanny phenomena—a mirror that ages them, a restorative drink, and a pervasive sense of enchantment. After two hours that feel like an age, they return home in a cart, exhausted and half-somnolent.

IV
The Rameyev family and the Matov brothers dine together, leading to heated political and personal arguments. Piotr Matov confesses his love to Elisaveta, who rejects him, citing their ideological differences and her commitment to freedom and revolution.
