Colonel Lindburg's report clears Don Luis of everything, which is exactly the kind of clearance that should make a careful policeman uneasy. He advises old Don Mario on young stock, visits Veiro, and is seen in places a cattleman has no business being. His letter to the Commander-in-Chief, scribbled on rough paper and smuggled in a hollow stem, is the first sign that the resistance has a hand on the ground.
