# Sir Jasper Fidget — The Country Wife character guide

> Sir Jasper Fidget in The Country Wife by William Wycherley.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Sir Jasper, Jasper Fidget

**First appearance:** 0005-act-i

## Snapshot

A bustling London husband who mistakes strategic negligence for prudence, cheerfully delivering his restless wife into the very lodgings he should fear most.

## Who they are

Sir Jasper is a man of business and pleasure whose chief talent is being usefully absent; he invites Horner to dine and play cards with Lady Fidget, reasoning that a husband should provide innocent diversion rather than police his wife. That confidence is exactly what Horner's eunuch stratagem exploits, since Sir Jasper's complacency opens doors no jealous husband would. His blundering trust sets the machinery of the Fidget household in motion and shows how easily London's reputation economy can be gamed.
