# Mrs. Dainty Fidget — The Country Wife character guide

> Mrs. Dainty Fidget in The Country Wife by William Wycherley.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mrs. Dainty, Dainty

**First appearance:** 0005-act-i

## Snapshot

Lady Fidget's sister-in-law, whose fashionable disdain for Horner barely conceals a competitive appetite for his attention and his china.

## Who they are

Mrs. Dainty moves through Horner's lodgings as part of the Fidget faction, trading theatrical revulsion with Lady Fidget while privately angling for the same favours. Her cry of 'foh!' at Horner's civility is less moral outrage than a bid in the ongoing contest for his notice. She embodies the town lady whose reputation is guarded fiercely and her desires barely, and her rivalry with Lady Fidget turns Horner's drawing room into a quiet battlefield of manners.
