# Lady Fidget — The Country Wife character guide

> Lady Fidget in The Country Wife by William Wycherley.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Lady Fidget

**First appearance:** 0005-act-i

## Snapshot

A woman of quality who guards her reputation like a fortress while quietly treating it as the only thing worth losing, and only in private.

## Who they are

Lady Fidget moves through the town with the confidence of a woman whose honour is beyond question, and she intends to keep it that way in public. Her husband Sir Jasper, eager to keep her occupied, practically delivers her to Horner's lodgings, and she protests his civility with a chorus of fohs that fool no one who is paying attention. She is the play's sharpest portrait of a reputation maintained at the exact expense of the virtue it is supposed to protect.
