Mrs. Blackett

Mrs. Todd's aged mother on Green Island, whose gentle cheer and long widowhood make her the moral heart of the Bowden family gatherings.

First appearance: Green Island

As a supporting figure in The Country of the Pointed Firs, Mrs. Blackett is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.

Small, bright-eyed, and beloved, she lives simply with her son William and treasures rare visits from her daughter and the narrator. Her quiet grief for a sister separated by marriage and distance shadows her contentment without souring it. At the Bowden reunion she becomes the emotional hinge — proof that endurance and affection can outlast the sea's separations.
