# Maximilian Morrel — The Count of Monte Cristo character guide > Maximilian Morrel in The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Maximilian, M. Morrel, young Maximilian **First appearance:** 0028-xxix-the-house-of-morrel-son ## Snapshot A soldier of unshakable integrity, he loves the daughter of the man who could destroy him and never once considers retreat. ## Who they are Maximilian is the son of the shipowner who once employed Edmond Dantès, and he carries that family's plain decency into a world of salons and secrets. He loves Valentine de Villefort, whose father would never consent to the match, so their meetings happen in stolen half-hours and depend on the silence of an old man who cannot speak. His courage is the kind that doesn't announce itself — which is precisely why Monte Cristo, watching from the shadows, finds in him something worth protecting. ## Relationships ### [Edmond Dantès](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/characters/edmond_dantes) _friendship_ Dantès acts as a benefactor and protector to Maximilian, the son of his former employer, whom he deeply respects and aids. ### [Valentine de Villefort](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/characters/valentine_de_villefort) _romantic_ Maximilian and Valentine are deeply in love, but their relationship is thwarted by her father's schemes and family intrigue. ### [Gérard de Villefort](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/characters/gerard_de_villefort) _rivalry_ Villefort opposes Maximilian's love for his daughter Valentine and actively works to keep them apart through manipulation. ### [Edmond Dantès](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/characters/edmond_dantes) _friendship_ Dantès acts as a benefactor and protector to Maximilian, the son of his former employer, whom he deeply respects and aids. ### [Edmond Dantès](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/characters/edmond_dantes) _friendship_ Dantès acts as a benefactor and protector to Maximilian, the son of his former employer, whom he deeply respects and aids. ### [Valentine de Villefort](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/characters/valentine_de_villefort) _romantic_ Maximilian and Valentine are deeply in love, but their relationship is thwarted by her father's schemes and family intrigue. ### [Valentine de Villefort](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/characters/valentine_de_villefort) _romantic_ Maximilian and Valentine are deeply in love, but their relationship is thwarted by her father's schemes and family intrigue. ### [Gérard de Villefort](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/characters/gerard_de_villefort) _rivalry_ Villefort opposes Maximilian's love for his daughter Valentine and actively works to keep them apart through manipulation. ### [Gérard de Villefort](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/characters/gerard_de_villefort) _rivalry_ Villefort opposes Maximilian's love for his daughter Valentine and actively works to keep them apart through manipulation. ## In the story ### [The Evening of the Betrothal](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/ix-the-evening-of-the-betrothal) Morrel tries in vain to secure Dantès' release, but is met with refusal and returns home in despair. ### [The Fifth of September](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/xxx-the-fifth-of-september) Morrel's son, who reluctantly agrees to his father's plan to die with honor, but is later overjoyed by the family's salvation. ### [The Breakfast](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/xl-the-breakfast) Revealed as the man who saved Château-Renaud's life in Africa;
