# Madame Danglars — The Count of Monte Cristo character guide > Madame Danglars in The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Hermine, the Baronne Danglars, Baronne Danglars **First appearance:** 0038-xxxix-the-guests ## Snapshot The Baroness Danglars, a woman of appetites and calculations whose salon is a stage for the Count's most delicate maneuvers. ## Who they are Madame Danglars presides over one of the wealthiest households in Paris, her influence extending through her husband's bank and her discreet affair with Lucien Debray. She is shrewd, restless, and entirely unsentimental about the marriage that made her rich — qualities that make her both a formidable social operator and an easy target for a man who understands leverage. When the Count returns her dappled grays with a flattering note, the gesture is not gallantry but a move in a game she does not yet know she is playing. ## In the story ### [Unlimited Credit](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/xlvi-unlimited-credit) Danglars's wife, whom Monte Cristo is about to meet; she is of noble birth and has visitors including Debray. ### [The Dappled Grays](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/xlvii-the-dappled-grays) Angry at the sale of her dappled grays, intrigued by Monte Cristo's wealth and mystery. ### [Robert le Diable](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/liii-robert-le-diable) Hosts the Count of Morcerf in her box and converses with Monte Cristo, expressing gratitude for the dappled grays. ### [A Flurry in Stocks](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/liv-a-flurry-in-stocks) Referred to as the daring speculator behind Danglars' stock trades; Albert suggests teaching her a lesson through false news. ### [In the Lucern Patch](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/lvii-in-the-lucern-patch) Accompanies Eugénie on a visit to Valentine, causing the delay in Valentine's meeting with Maximilian. ### [Ghosts](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/lxii-ghosts) Recognized by Bertuccio as the pregnant woman from the garden; she shows unusual humility during the visit. ### [The Dinner](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/lxiii-the-dinner) Deeply agitated by Monte Cristo's allusions to the red room and a past crime; she faints and is revived with a red liquid, later escorted to the garden. ### [The Beggar](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/lxiv-the-beggar) Uneasy during the evening, she returns to Paris in Villefort's carriage. ### [A Conjugal Scene](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/lxv-a-conjugal-scene) Shows nervous irritability and is accused by her husband of using secret information from Debray to speculate. ### [Matrimonial Projects](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/lxvi-matrimonial-projects) Departs in her carriage after Debray fails to visit; her speculative losses in Spanish affairs are discussed. ### [The Office of the King’s Attorney](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/lxvii-the-office-of-the-king-s-attorney) Visits Villefort in secret, disguised, to discuss their shared past and the threat posed by Monte Cristo. ### [Progress of Cavalcanti the Younger](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/lxxvi-progress-of-cavalcanti-the-younger) Nervous around Monte Cristo since the Auteuil dinner, but his charm dispels her fears; she observes the tension between the suitors. ### [The Room of the Retired Baker](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/lxxxi-the-room-of-the-retired-baker) Mentioned as part of the family whose approval is needed for the marriage. ### [Valentine](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/xciii-valentine) Visits with her daughter Eugénie to announce Eugénie's engagement to Prince Cavalcanti. ### [The Contract](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/xcvi-the-contract) The mother of the bride, she signs the contract and faints when the police arrive to arrest Andrea. ### [The Departure for Belgium](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/xcvii-the-departure-for-belgium) Madame Danglars is terrified and remains in her boudoir following the exposure of Andrea Cavalcanti. ### [The Law](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/xcix-the-law) Seeks Debray after the scandal, then pleads with Villefort for mercy on Benedetto. ### [Dividing the Proceeds](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/cvi-dividing-the-proceeds) Madame Danglars receives a large sum from Debray but is left humiliated and abandoned, hoping in vain for his affection or support. ### [CX: The Indictment](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/chapters/cx-the-indictment) Present in the audience, she faints upon hearing the revelation. ## Links - HTML: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/characters/madame_danglars - Book: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se - All characters: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_count_of_monte_cristo_se/characters
