# Fernand Mondego — The Count of Monte Cristo character guide

> Fernand Mondego in The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Fernand, Count of Morcerf, Comte de Morcerf, Colonel Fernand

**First appearance:** 0002-iii-the-catalans

## Snapshot

The Catalan who wanted Mercédès, posted the letter that buried his rival, and climbed through betrayal to become Count of Morcerf.

## Who they are

He is the rival whose jealousy sets the whole machine in motion: a fisherman who rises to general and peer of France by selling his honor in Greece and Spain as readily as he sold Edmond. In his own house he is a pale, watching figure behind curtains, measuring his son's duel and his wife's silences for signs of his own ruin. He matters because he is the first target of the Count's return — and the proof that the man who took everything can lose it just as fast.
