## Who they are

Caderousse is the innkeeper of the small world around Marseilles, a man whose avarice and cowardice made him a silent accomplice to the ruin of an innocent sailor. He knows the truth of the betrayal and has spent years being squeezed by it, first by his own conscience and then by men who know what he knows. His weakness is the hinge on which the early tragedy turns, and his later reappearance proves that the past in this novel is never finished with anyone.
