Concepts
Ideas that structure The Coral Island by R. M. Ballantyne — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Adventure and Exploration
The narrative is driven by the protagonist Ralph Rover's insatiable thirst for adventure and exploration, from his early sea voyages to the shipwreck on the Coral Island and subsequent travels across the Pacific.
Survival and Self-Reliance
After being shipwrecked, the three boys must rely on their wits, resourcefulness, and teamwork to survive on a deserted island, building shelter, finding food, and overcoming natural challenges.
Colonialism and Civilization
The book reflects colonial attitudes by contrasting the 'savage' native cultures with the 'civilized' Christian values of the European boys, often portraying missionaries as bringers of light and order.
Christianity and Morality
Christian faith is a central moral compass, with characters like Ralph clinging to his mother's Bible teachings, and the narrative contrasting Christian converts with 'heathen' cannibals, emphasizing redemption and divine providence.
Friendship and Loyalty
The bond between Ralph, Jack, and Peterkin is a cornerstone of the story, as they support each other through danger, hardship, and moral dilemmas, vowing to stick together 'through thick and thin.'
Nature and the Sublime
The natural world is depicted with wonder and awe, from the enchanting coral gardens and lush tropical forests to the terrifying storms and volcanic landscapes, highlighting both its beauty and power.
Savagery vs. Civilization
The book repeatedly contrasts the 'bloodthirsty savages' and their violent customs (cannibalism, warfare) with the civilized, Christian way of life, suggesting a hierarchy of cultures.
Providence and Fate
The narrative frequently suggests that events are guided by a higher power, with characters surviving storms, shipwrecks, and pirate attacks through what they perceive as divine intervention or fate.
