# Bloody Bill — The Coral Island character guide

> Bloody Bill in The Coral Island by R. M. Ballantyne.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Bill, XXIV Bloody Bill

**First appearance:** 0018-xvii

## Snapshot

A rough, reformed pirate with a violent past and a conscience he can't quite outrun, Bill becomes the boys' unlikely interpreter and ally among the islanders.

## Who they are

Bill is the bridge between the boys and the Fijian world, a man whose nickname admits what he once was and whose halting decency shows what he is trying to become. He translates Tararo's anger, explains the awful meaning of 'long pig,' and risks himself to do good among people who answer kindness with murder. His presence gives the middle chapters their moral weight: a man who knows the darkness because he came from it.
