# Sandy — The Conjure Woman character guide

> Sandy in The Conjure Woman by Charles W. Chesnutt.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Sandy Campbell

**First appearance:** 0001-po-sandy

## Snapshot

A skilled slave shuffled between masters like borrowed property, whose desperate love for his wife Tenie leads to a conjure that splits his shadow from his body.

## Who they are

Sandy's value as a worker makes him a commodity passed between Mars Marrabo's children, leaving him with no home, no stability, and no control over his own life. His deep attachment to Tenie drives him to seek a conjure solution when he's sent forty miles away, unable to bear another separation. His plight illustrates how slavery's casual cruelty destroys the most basic human connections, and why conjure becomes the only tool for those with no other power.
