# James Leach — The Condition of the Working Class in England character guide

> James Leach in The Condition of the Working Class in England by Friedrich Engels.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Leach

**First appearance:** 0011-labour-movements

## Snapshot

A working-class leader and Chartist who carried the agitation from the factory floor into the organized political movement.

## Who they are

Leach stands for the moment when the English workingman's opposition stops being sporadic and becomes a movement with names, meetings, and demands. As a Chartist he embodies the political turn of working-class energy, the same energy Engels says is directed entirely toward opposition to the existing order. His presence in the book shows that the revolt has leaders drawn from the workers themselves, not merely sympathizers from above.
