Concepts
Ideas that structure The Coming of Bill by P. G. Wodehouse — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Eugenics and Heredity
The book prominently features Lora Delane Porter's obsessive theories about heredity, prenatal influences, and the 'future of the race,' which drive her attempts to control Ruth's marriage and William Bannister's upbringing through strict, pseudo-scientific health regimens.
Wealth and Corruption
Inherited wealth is portrayed as a corrupting force that changes Ruth's character, creates a gulf between her and Kirk, and leads to a superficial, pleasure-seeking lifestyle, while the loss of money ultimately restores their happiness and values.
Love vs. Social Convention
The central romance between Kirk (a struggling artist) and Ruth (a millionaire's daughter) defies class expectations and family opposition, highlighting the conflict between genuine love and societal pressures to marry within one's station.
Parenthood and Child Rearing
The novel explores contrasting philosophies of raising William Bannister—from Mrs. Porter's sterilized, overprotective methods to Kirk's belief in natural, robust development—and examines the emotional bonds between parent and child.
Individualism vs. Interference
Characters like Bailey Bannister and Lora Delane Porter constantly meddle in others' lives, while Kirk and Ruth struggle to assert their own choices, illustrating the tension between personal freedom and well-meaning but destructive interference.
Art and Authenticity
Kirk's identity as an artist is central to his character; his initial laziness and later commitment to honest work reflect the theme of finding purpose and authenticity through creative labor rather than idle wealth.
Marriage and Companionship
The book examines marriage as a partnership that requires mutual effort, communication, and shared values, contrasting the happy early days of Kirk and Ruth's marriage with the strain caused by wealth and social distractions.
Class and Bohemianism
The narrative contrasts the rigid, moneyed world of the Bannisters with the free-spirited, bohemian artist community Kirk inhabits, exploring themes of snobbery, belonging, and the value of unconventional lifestyles.
