Freedom is invoked as a guiding force, and the narrative contrasts the oppression of European monarchies and the Inquisition with the promise of liberty in the New World, particularly in the rise of the United States.
Progress and Civilization
The book traces a progressive arc from primitive societies to advanced civilizations, emphasizing the development of arts, commerce, and governance as humanity moves toward enlightenment and unity.
Tyranny and Injustice
Columbus's imprisonment, the brutal treatment of indigenous peoples, the horrors of the Inquisition, and British cruelty during the American Revolution all illustrate the destructive consequences of tyranny and greed.
Sacrifice and Suffering
Columbus endures personal suffering and ingratitude for his discoveries, while other characters—such as the Inca prince Rocha and American revolutionaries—face martyrdom and hardship in pursuit of greater good.
Unity and Harmony
The poem envisions a future where nations unite through commerce, mutual interest, and peace, culminating in a global harmony symbolized by the 'one white flag of peace' and the federation of states.
Nature and the Divine
Nature is depicted as both a sublime force and a teacher, with the sun, stars, and landscapes reflecting divine order; the poem also explores indigenous sun worship and the conflict between pagan and Christian beliefs.
Colonialism and Its Consequences
The narrative examines the dual legacy of colonization—bringing progress and freedom to some while causing destruction, enslavement, and cultural erasure for indigenous peoples and others.
