Fleming Stone enters the case after the household has been scrubbed, dusted, and polished into apparent hopelessness, yet he reads the immaculate rooms with the same ease others read a familiar page. Where the local detective saw nothing, Stone finds the ash-chute in the drawing-room fireplace, the assassin's true point of entry. His methodical, almost indifferent calm unsettles those around him, but it is precisely that patience that transforms a stalled investigation into a countdown toward an unbearable revelation.
